Free Parapsychology Course

By Allison Jornlin

International Parapsychology Course Returns

Apparitions, poltergeists, and hauntings are the focus of a free parapsychology lecture series offered this month. Throughout March, paranormal experts from around the world are at your disposal. Attendance won't make you a parapsychologist, but this free opportunity to learn from professionals in the field is priceless.

The program is entitled the ParaMOOC. MOOC is educator-speak, which stands for "Massive Open Online Course," and is also just fun to say. The course's live video-chat lectures are the real deal, so they are very academic, but ghost hunters will still find the content fascinating. Participants watch presentations, ask questions, and discuss paranormal topics with experts and other attendees via live Zoom sessions.

2023 ParaMOOC Speakers

Presenters include Christopher Laursen, possibly the only academic in the world with a PhD in poltergeists; and well-known parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach; as well as lesser-known researchers from Brazil, the U.K., Australia, and Japan. The emphasis on international inclusion was a goal of the late organizer of the ParaMOOC, parapsychologist Carlos Alvarado, who founded the annual course with his wife, parapsychologist Nancy Zingrone. Zingrone, and current organizer Bryan Williams, Research Director of the Psychical Research Foundation decided to relaunch the ParaMOOC this March to carry on Alvarado's work during his birthday month.

According to Williams, ParaMOOC's drive to share international findings is a necessary effort because there are "researchers and scholars around the world who have done relevant and important work, but which may not have received much attention because their work may have been presented or published in languages other than English." The ParaMOOC tradition to make international research along with parapsychology in general more accessible continues.
