Built in 1904, the former Ledgelawn Inn is one of the original grand summer estates in Bar Harbor referred to by the elite simply as cottages. Ledgelawn may be the most haunted building in Bar Harbor, but its most famous ghost is a woman in white, a jilted bride who donned her wedding dress and hung herself from the rafters in the attic with her veil.
This bereaved ghost called Mary Margaret is spotted mostly on the third floor, but sometimes elsewhere in the building. When the mansion still operated as an inn, one guest had a very close encounter with Mary Margaret. This man claims that he not only witnessed the ghost bride enter the room, but that she actually got into bed with him! Because he didn’t want to incur her wrath, he just pretended as if nothing was wrong, shut his eyes tightly, and rolled over. One wonders how much sleep he got that night.
Expect to hear more ghost stories like this one as well to learn more about a variety of local paranormal happenings. Begin at the beginning with tales from the indigenous peoples who once called the area home. Some ancient monster sightings from the Wabanaki Confederacy's oral tradition curiously align with more contemporary accounts of encounters with unknown animals.
The Bar Harbor Inn was the scene of contemporary ghost reports and once the site of a private club for wealthy gentlemen called The Reading Room. One of the club's members, although not really a Ghostbuster, helped pave the way for authentic parapsychological research.
Ghost stories abound along this scenic walkway as well as spectacular views of famous landmarks including the Egg Rock Lighthouse and Balance Rock. It's also the perfect setting for spooky seafaring yarns, tales of Maine's haunted lighthouses, and reports of a local sea serpent.
Long a playground for the rich and famous, the history of Bar Harbor’s mansions is steeped in scandal, mystery, and intrigue including astounding accounts of hauntings and one legendary curse. One such haunted estate has now become the Balance Rock Inn once the home of two little girls pestered by an annoying ghost.
Pay your respects at the historic graveyard of St. Saviour's Episcopal Church established in 1790. Mainly populated with tombstones dating back to the 19th Century, this cemetery may not be haunted, but is the setting for more than one extraordinary story.
Working people in town also report brushes with the unknown and the unexplained. Seemingly ordinary shops and apartments have become the backdrop for unexplained events. Even the sky above has been haunted by UFOs.
Like many vintage cinemas and performance venues this historic theater has its own ghostly lore. What makes this destination unique are its scandalous historical secrets as well as its peculiar Silver Screen specters such as the glowing green ghost said to wander backstage.
On this tour, we focus on building exteriors and outdoor spaces. Businesses and public places are open for you to visit during regular business hours. Otherwise we respect the privacy of individuals and organizations and expect that our guests do the same.
Service animals are welcome. However, for liability issues, please leave your furry friends at home if you don’t require their assistance.
We can never guarantee a supernatural encounter, but we will explain paranormal phenomena such as cold spots and residual hauntings. What we do guarantee: Our local connections and dedication to research means you'll get authentic accounts — in all their shocking detail.
While our tours do not contain anything too graphic or inappropriate, we find that kids that enjoy history have the best time. You know your children and that's left up to you. We do not recommend bringing children in strollers because sometimes that can be difficult with larger walking groups.
All sales are final, but we can help you with a reschedule or ticket credit. We love ghosts, not monsters!
