LOST IN THE DEVIL'S TRIANGLE

"Mayday Mayday this is Ecourpe three eight zero eight Hotel in flight from Santo Domingo to San Juan, Puerto Rico. We have a very weird… ah… object in front of us that make us lose course… Right now we’re supposed to be at about thirty five miles off the coast of Puerto Rico but we have something weird in front of us that makes us lose course all the time…”

Those were Jose Maldonado Torres’ last words to the control tower before his flight disappeared on June 28th, 1980. The infamous Bermuda Triangle stretches from Miami to the island of Bermuda in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

But San Juan has much more than UFOs! From pirate ghosts to the spirits of broken-hearted Spanish soldiers to the tales of the Chupacabra and the Vampire of Moca, the Isle of Enchantment is full of amazing ghost stories and supernatural tales. Discover the unique haunted heritage of beautiful old San Juan, Puerto Rico with real ghost stories, local folklore, and recent reports of paranormal activity.

As the third oldest European established city in the New World, San Juan’s deep and rich history awaits. This history, however, is not for the faint of heart! Deep in old San Juan, lay stories of greed, murder, and star-crossed lovers. Was Ponce de Leon really searching for the fountain of youth? Did he really haunt the island after his death, or was it a Taino chief wearing his armor? Does the Catedral de San Juan Bautista really have bone fragments of John the Baptist? These questions and more will be explored on this ghost tour of old San Juan!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the San Juan Ghost Walk?

On this tour, we focus on building exteriors and outdoor spaces. Businesses and public places are open for you to visit during regular business hours. Otherwise we respect the privacy of individuals and organizations and expect that our guests do the same.

  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour begins at Plaza Colón, by the statue of Christopher Columbus, in Old San Juan. The route covers approximately 1.5 miles through historic streets and concludes near the same area, allowing participants to easily return to nearby parking or local restaurants.

  • How long is the tour?

The San Juan Ghost Walk lasts two hours and covers roughly 1.5 miles. The pace is easy to moderate, with several stops to hear stories, explore haunted sites, and take photos of San Juan’s beautifully lit historic buildings at night.

  • What stories or locations are featured?

While our tours do not contain anything too graphic or inappropriate, we find that kids that enjoy history have the best time. You know your children and that's left up to you. We do not recommend bringing children in strollers because sometimes that can be difficult with larger walking groups.

  • Who leads the tour?

We do our best to answer calls and emails as promptly as they are received. Please make sure to leave a voicemail with the city and tour time. We try to accommodate travel and weather issues, but our public tours cannot wait for more than 10 minutes. Reschedules are available if the date you are interested in is not sold out.

  • What time does the tour start?

Tours run nightly at 7:30 PM, making it the perfect evening activity before or after dinner in Old San Juan. Because it’s an outdoor walking tour, guests are encouraged to check in early and arrive ready for an atmospheric nighttime experience.

  • Is the tour suitable for children?

Due to the nature of ghost stories and nighttime walking, the minimum age is 13 years old. The tour is designed to be spooky but not graphic, focusing on history, folklore, and mystery rather than horror.

  • What should I wear or bring?

Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, as the tour runs even in light rain. Bringing a small umbrella or rain jacket is recommended. Cameras and phones are encouraged—many guests have captured mysterious images along the way!

  • Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

Most of the route is wheelchair accessible, though a few old cobblestone streets and steps may require minor route adjustments. Guests using wheelchairs are encouraged to notify the organizers in advance so accommodations can be made.

  • Can I bring pets or service animals?

Service animals are welcome on the San Juan Ghost Walk. However, for safety and liability reasons, personal pets are not permitted on the tour.

  • What if it rains or I need to cancel?

The tour operates rain or shine, with exceptions for severe weather. Because group sizes are limited, all sales are final, but the team is happy to reschedule in case of emergencies—they love ghosts, not monsters!

  • Why choose American Ghost Walks?

American Ghost Walks offers an authentic Puerto Rican haunted history experience, based on real research, local interviews, and verified stories. Founded in 2019, the company focuses on genuine folklore and culture—not tourist gimmicks—making it the island’s original haunted history tour.
